Until recently, automated cherry packing and sorting systems were largely mechanical and were limited to size sorting. Since a mechanical cherry sizer is limited to sizing on one plane, and cherries and other small fruits like grape tomatoes are not round fruit, sizing on one plane is simply not an accurate sizing method. Mechanical cherry sizing systems are also harder on the fruit. These issues have forced cherry packers and packers of other small sized fruits to consider other sorting solutions.

Like the apple and pear sorters before them, the Stas cherry grading system places the fruit in individual pockets that roll the fruit as they proceed through the vision sorter. This rolling action allows the electronic cameras to take several pictures of every side of the fruit.
